Most cannabis consumers don’t go for junk food when they get the munchies: survey

CBD Oracle found that 63% of stoners try to satisfy their hunger with healthy food

Those who think the lazy stoner stereotype is accurate may also believe that candy, chips and pizza are the ideal munchies of a baked couch potato. However, a new survey completed in the United States has shown that this is not necessarily the case.

Research from California-based CBD Oracle, which involved analyzing responses from 1,000 citizens, has shown that nearly two thirds of marijuana users will always “or sometimes” choose healthy snacks over junk food. Meanwhile, 24 per cent said they craved fruit, smoothies or salads when they were under the influence and had no interest in sweet or salty nibbles.

“While still a minority, the fact that about one in four people, high out of their minds, would choose a banana over a brownie or burger flies in the face of the junk-food-loving ‘stoner’ stereotype,” CBD Oracle highlighted in its article regarding the study.

Their key takeaway from these findings was that weed smokers are often more health-conscious than many believe, and several will go for a salad bar instead of a Big Mac at McDonald’s Corp (NYSE: MCD) or a tray full of sliders at White Castle.

“People assume cannabis automatically leads to junk food binges,” CBD Oracle’s Editorial Director, Houman Shahi, said. “But most users, especially regular ones, are trying to snack smarter. The ‘health-conscious stoner’ is real and the data proves it.”

There’s a couple problems though

Despite the stoned health kick of some, this study also found that nearly a quarter of respondents bought more junk food when they were under the influence.

Additionally, 53 per cent of survey participants said that marijuana munchies made their nutrition goals more difficult to stick to or attain.

“Even though most cannabis users try to eat healthier, most people struggle to maintain their weight and nutrition goals when the munchies hit,” CBD Oracle explained. Over 43 per cent of those who slip and give into junk food cravings after burning one down feel guilty about their lack of discipline, the assessment also showed.

Much of the research that CBD Oracle focuses on is centred around legalization in various American states. The cannabis analytics company also studies topics like cannabinoid regulations, the hemp market and weed-themed events.

Reviewing cannabis flower, vaporizers, edibles and other products has been one of the company’s specialties in past years. Imperial Extraction vape carts were the last product CBD Oracle evaluated, in January of 2024.
