The cannabis industry’s regulating body in Michigan is recalling dozens of batches of pre-rolled joints after they tested positive for human saliva.

The products were manufactured by Euclid LLC which dispensed the pre-licked products to 15 different retail stores in the state.

The Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency sent out the recall notice Thursday and warned that more product recalls could be issued as an investigation unfolds. The licensee has agreed to cooperate fully with the investigation, the MRA said.

Recalled products were sold at different times at different locations over the past month, and customers should check the recall notice to see if their pre-rolls are pre-licked. Recalled products should be returned to the provisioning centre or retailer where they were purchased for proper disposal.

Licking a joint to seal it is a classic way to roll at home but shouldn’t be how any pre-roll is wrapped.

It’s especially relevant considering the Covid-19 pandemic which has infected 86,191 and killed 6,247 in Michigan, according to state government. However, the latest safety information coming from the Canadian government suggests the virus might only be able to live on surfaces for anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days. So, despite a high ick factor in smoking a joint that a stranger licked, the latest data suggests that risk of infection might be low.

Michigan legalized recreational cannabis in November 2018 with the first legal sales kicking off Dec. 1, 2019. On the inaugural day, the state raked in US$221,000 in weed sales, reported the local Cannabis Legal Group. Since then, 1,411 cities and townships have passed legislation banning recreational sales, including the city of Detroit, according the the website potguide.

Most of the pre-rolls being recalled have names like Strawana Premium, Nightmare Cookies, Pineapple Cheese and Fruity Pebbles. Which raises the question: is this saliva contamination an inappropriate prank, clueless employee or just someone munching out after sampling their own supply?
