Lawmakers in Washington have introduced a bill that would enable short-term rental hosts to offer complimentary cannabis pre-rolls to their guests.
Introduced on Jan. 23 and sponsored by Democratic Representatives Melanie Morgan (lead), Natasha Hill and Nicole Macri, the legislation aims to authorize an annual permit valued at US$75 for those renting through platforms like Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ: ABNB) (ETR: 6Z1). It would enable them to provide guests with joints weighing up to 1 gram after verifying they are over 21 years of age upon arrival.
Hosts will also be mandated to remind their lodgers about state laws that prohibit public consumption and opening packages within view of others.
The bill is scheduled for its first hearing on Jan. 30 in the House Consumer Protection & Business Committee. Advocates have argued that it could enhance visitor experiences within a state that is already renowned for relaxed cannabis policies, thereby attracting more tourism. It has drawn limited public commentary since its introduction and is yet to attract any condemnation of significance.
If passed, Washington would be the first state to permit this controversial hospitality feature.
Washington and Colorado were the first states to legalize adult-use cannabis in 2012, followed by California in 2016. Medical cannabis has been legal in the state since 1998.
The sector in Washington remains robust despite oversupply challenges and a 37 per cent excise tax for local retail operators.
Airbnb is highly popular in Washington due to attractions like national parks, tech industry visitors in Seattle and wilderness activities. Average annual revenues for state listings average at approximately US$45,000 with a typical daily rate exceeding US$173.
Should the bill pass, other popular short-term rental providers like Vacasa and Hipcamp could also begin offering their patrons local marijuana. Additionally, Expedia Group Inc (NASDAQ: EXPE) (FRA: E3X1) and its subsidiary Vrbo.
