Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN) introduced new Matter enabled software development kits for both WiFi and Thread SimpleLink wireless microcontrollers (MCU).

These will streamline adoption for the Matter protocol in applications using Internet of Things (IoT). The software adds onto the company’s involved with the Connectivity Standards Alliance in the 2.4 gigahertz (Ghz) connectivity space.

“In a matter of weeks, we’re quickly seeing alliance members building on the new capabilities of Matter and bringing innovation to the ecosystem, in this case a streamlined approach for MCUs and IoT applications over Wi-Fi and Thread. Texas Instruments’ new wireless MCUs for IoT applications will help designers seamlessly and securely connect with interoperable Matter devices,” said Chris LaPre, head of technology at the connectivity standards alliance.

Texas Instruments is a global semiconductor company that makes, tests and sells processing chips for different sectors. These include industrial, automotive, personal electronics, communications equipment and enterprise systems.

What’s the Matter Protocol?

Matter is a connectivity protocol developed by the alliance, formerly called Zigbee Alliance. The system runs on Thread and Wi-Fi network layers and uses Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning, giving devices from different platforms and brands the ability to communicate. Therefore, manufacturers can use the unified application layer to leverage this open-source protocol to boost IoT development.

TI sits on the board of the alliance and has been one of the primary participants in Matter’s development. Consequently, this puts company is in a prime position to help engineers build wider and more interconnected IoT ecosystems, and will help them bypass the compatibility issues plaguing the technology. For example, engineers can use the software and wireless MCU’s like the CC3235SF and CC2652R7 to make IoT applications that are geared for power retention, secure, battery powered, and good for smart homes and industrial automation while connecting with devices across proprietary systems. One of the biggest issues is compatibility with alternative systems from other brands. This resolves it.

“At Grundfos, we strongly believe that collaboration will be key to reaching our innovation and sustainability goals. Our collaboration with TI to bring low-power, Matter-enabled radio solutions to the market will play an important role in delivering comfort to our end users and reducing energy consumption in HVAC systems – helping reduce carbon emissions,” said Andres Johanson, senior vice president and head of group technology and innovation, Grundfos Holding.
