Workers hired by the Boys & Girls Club of Elko just poured concrete at what will soon be known as the Nevada Gold Mines Recreation Center. The facility is slated to open its doors during this year’s fall months.
The top-ranking joint venture operator run by Barrick Gold Corp (TSE: ABX) (NYSE: GOLD) and Newmont Corporation (TSE: NGT) (NYSE: NEM) made a US$10-million-dollar contribution to its development in March last year, according to the Elko Daily Free Press.
Once completed, the facility will have two pools, a waterslide, an outdoor aquatic complex, a fitness centre, a multi-purpose gymnasium with basketball and volleyball courts, and a concession. The project is expected to cost US$32.6 million. Ground was broken at the site in May.
Additionally, the Boys & Girls Club says the complex will serve as a venue for rodeos and local equestrian or horse riding events.
Nevada Gold Mines has made other contributions to the local club in recent years and already has a couple facilities with its name on them.
In the third quarter of 2021, the gold mining giant donated over US$3 million to help the youth organization establish two Nevada Gold Mines Early Learning Center locations in Elko and Spring Creek. The town of Battle Mountain has one of these child education hubs as well.
Mining is a key contributor to Elko’s economy and Nevada Gold Mines is one the city’s top employers.

Elko gets major mining facility, scheduled to open in Q1
Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions has invested over US$50 million into a multi-purpose complex in the city. It will replace Sandvik’s older facility constructed in 2011, which is much smaller.
“This facility will be our largest of several branches serving the U.S. mining market,” Vice President Victor Tapia said in 2023. Operations will commence at the complex by the end of March.
The decision to establish a bigger and better facility was inspired by an increasing demand for the company’s mining equipment. Sandvik produces battery-electric drill rigs, loaders, haul trucks and various other tools.
Elko is an ideal location for equipment suppliers due to the city’s close proximity to multiple mining operations. Another Swedish equipment supplier, Epiroc AB Class A (STO: EPI-A), set up a major service centre there at the end of 2023 to cater to customers in one of the world’s top mining jurisdictions.
This year’s annual Elko Mining Expo will be held in early June. The renowned event is one of the most highly esteemed in the United States.
Elko County is part of the Carlin Trend, which has produced more than 80 million ounces of gold.
Nevada Gold Mines has three open-pit operations within a 35 mile radius of the city.
