A city renowned for its beautiful architecture will be hosting this year’s annual World Conference on Lung Cancer. The event was held in San Diego, California last year and Singapore in 2023. It gets a new venue on a yearly basis.
In Barcelona, Spain, the prestigious thoracic oncology conference put on by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) will bring together more than 7,000 delegates from over 100 nations. They will be discussing the latest advancements in research, treatment and screening from Sept. 6 to 9.
“WCLC is a critical forum in our field, bringing together clinicians, researchers, and industry leaders to share insights, challenge assumptions, and accelerate progress for patients with lung cancer,” said Precision for Medicine Chief Medical Officer, Harpreet Singh, in a social media post on Wednesday.
“Looking forward to meaningful discussions on the next wave of treatment innovation,” she added.
This year’s plenary speakers of note are Filippos Filippidis, the European Respiratory Society’s Tobacco Control Committee Chair; Lars Konge, a Danish cardio-thoracic surgeon and medical professor at the University of Copenhagen; and Arsela Prelaj, an Italian medical oncologist who specializes in thoracic malignancies.
Filippidis will be giving a presentation titled “From Smoking to Solutions: Advancing Tobacco Control for Better Lung Health in Europe.” Konge will be discussing how to train the next generation surgeons in a speech titled Empowering the Next Generation of Surgical Oncologists: Leveraging Technology for Oncologic Surgical Training. And lastly, Preljaj will be enlightening attendees about the implications of artificial intelligence in the field with her talk on “Data-Driven Oncology: How Big Data and AI can Transform Lung Cancer.”
Subspecialties covered in workshops and educational sessions will include thoracic surgery, nursing, robotic navigational bronchoscopy, and rare thoracic cancers such as mesothelioma and thymic tumours.

Swift detection an important theme
Screening is also a key topic among attendees. When it comes to lung cancer, early detection is one of the most important subjects.
Screening innovations, such as low-dose CT advancements, AI-powered imaging analysis and newly emerging biomarker-based diagnostics tools have become popular discussion points in the sector.
One of the most important to emerge in recent years is the OneBreath screening tool from Breath Diagnostics. This breath analysis system is low-cost, non-invasive, highly efficient and thoroughly studied.
