American triathletes will be able to soothe their aching muscles using cannabidoil (CBD) without facing potential professional reprimands after USA Triathlon today announced its partnership with Pure Spectrum CBD.
This is the first American national governing body in the Olympic and Paralympic movement to formally partner with a CBD manufacturer.
CBD is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis, often used for pain management and increasingly popular with professional athletes.
The United States Anti-Doping Agency and the World Anti-Doping Agency allow athletes to take CBD both in and out of competition, though the use of THC, the other most common cannabinoid in cannabis which gets you high, is banned.
Rocky Harris, CEO of USA Triathlon, said his organization partnered with Pure Spectrum because they offer THC-free products made from federally legal industrial hemp.
“They apply strict third-party testing protocols to assure the products are pure,” he said in a statement. “They are completely transparent by posting batch-specific test results for every product they sell. They also control the entire supply chain to ensure every stage of the process is standardized, controlled and evaluated from the time the seed is planted in their family farms until the package is delivered to a customer.”
More and more athletes turning to Pure Spectrum CBD
This isn’t the Colorado-based cannabis company’s first time getting involved in sports.
Pure Spectrum sponsors over 100 professional athletes including Aussie UFC Fighter Megan Anderson and six-time Obstacle Course Racing World Champion Hunter McIntyre and earned the title of first cannabis company to form a partnership with a major sports organization with its sponsorship of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games.
“As athletes ourselves, we understand the incredible stress competitive sports puts on the body, which is why we’re proud to partner with USA Triathlon to bring the benefits of CBD to the most elite athletes competing today,” said Brady Bell, founder and CEO of Pure Spectrum in a statement.
The CBD oil is sent to multiple third-party labs to verify the product potency and to ensure the product contains no THC or any other banned substances, which gives athletes peace of mind, added Bell.
Complete test results from these third-party labs are also posted on Botanacor, a leading industrial hemp and CBD testing laboratory, so athletes can verify results themselves.
Pure Spectrum sponsored athlete McIntyre competes as a triathlete and CrossFit games competitor and calls CBD his secret weapon, which allows him to train harder, run faster and recover quicker.
But athletes in the United States should still exercise caution when taking cannabis.
The PGA Tour suspended professional golfer Matt Every this Friday after Every tested positive for cannabis, which is a clear violation of the tour’s conduct policy on drugs of abuse, according to The Baltimore Sun.
“I tested positive for cannabis, a drug I do not abuse and a drug that I have a legal prescription for in the state of Florida,” Every said in a statement. The golfer said his doctor of 30 years wrote him the prescription for cannabis to help with his mental health.
