New research completed by Toronto Metropolitan University investigators has conclusively determined what tokers around the globe already knew: consuming weed makes music sound even better.
For their study titled “Exploring the interaction between cannabis, hearing, and music,” the Canadian institution’s scholars had 104 participants complete an online questionnaire. Fifteen select respondees were then chosen to complete a more extensive hour-long interview. They were recruited at the university and through flyers at multiple dispensaries in the Toronto area.
“Quantitative analyses revealed that participants reported significantly greater hearing sensitivity and levels of state absorption while high compared to sober,” the authors wrote in the study.
Half of the respondents described having better hearing sensitivity after consuming marijuana than while sober. Furthermore, 60 per cent said that cannabis had a distinct impact on their hearing, but that’s about as surprising as the primary finding of the study.
“I’m able to connect different things that I wouldn’t normally connect [when sober],” one of the participants said. “For music that would be scales, rhythm patterns, harmonies and how these coaligned together.”

Toronto has plethora of cannabis-friendly festivals
Since legalization in 2018, Canada’s largest city has embraced marijuana culture at an assortment of live music events.
These include 420 Toronto, held annually on Apr. 20 at Nathan Philips Square; the Kensington Market Jazz Festival; and the city’s High Life Music Festival.
Also Green Market Toronto and Bud Bash Toronto — a cannabis-themed music event held periodically in secret locations throughout the city that are revealed to ticket holders only.
Toronto is known for cannabis research forums as well, such as the Toronto Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research Consortium. The Research Society on Marijuana held its eighth annual meeting at the Downtown Toronto Hilton in July.
Public cannabis operators headquartered in the Toronto area include Canopy Growth Corporation (NASDAQ: CGC) and Cronos Group Inc (TSE: CRON).
