Hatch is aiming to break new ground in the sleep tech space with a dual-purpose shut-eye tracker and alarm clock that eliminates the need to wear anything but pyjamas while you rest. No charging necessary either, it just lives on your night table.
This month, the California electronics company started selling the new Hatch Sleep Clock. The gadget previously came into the public eye in June through a joint announcement with Bloomberg and now people can get their hands on it.
Available exclusively at hatch.co for US$249.99, it will reach other retailers including Amazon later this year. The device sits on the bedside and uses ultra-low-power radio signals to detect breathing and movement from a few feet away. It requires no camera, microphone or wearable.
Hatch claims the technology reaches 97 per cent accuracy against clinical polysomnography for detecting sleep stages. It notes when you get into bed, fall asleep, and when move through light, deep and REM stages or wake during the night. Rather than handing out a single sleep score, the Sleep Clock focuses on trends over time and offers suggestions. These might include adjusting bedtime, adding morning sunlight, reducing screen time, or incorporating specific audio.
The company draws on sleep hygiene principles and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia to shape these prompts. It also functions as a full wind-down and wake-up system. Users set an ideal unwinding time and the clock gradually fills the room with calming light and ambient sound. Options include meditations, sleep stories and other tracks.
In the morning it brightens slowly to simulate sunrise. Contactless sleep tracking, personalised insights and a nightly plan are included from the start, along with a 30-day trial of the full audio library. After the trial, a Hatch+ subscription at US$5.99 a month or US$59.99 a year is needed to keep access to the complete collection of more than 2,500 sounds, stories and meditations. Controls sit on the device itself so the phone can stay out of the bedroom.
Compared with Google’s second-gen Nest Hub, the only night table device with similar capabilities, the intelligent Hatch clock shares contactless radar-style sensing for movement and breathing. The Nest Hub, however, is a full smart display with a screen, microphones that can note coughing or snoring, and environmental readings for light and temperature. It integrates with Google’s services and voice assistant, making it more versatile for general smart-home use.
Hatch deliberately stays screen-free and microphone-free, prioritising privacy and a simpler nightstand presence, but it lacks those extra sensors and broader connectivity. Unlike Google’s always‑listening Nest Hub, Hatch’s sensor‑only approach eliminates voice and visual data from the equation, offering a narrower but arguably more private data footprint. Overall, the Sleep Clock stands out for combining contactless tracking with routine-building tools and content. It trades the Nest Hub’s display and smart-home depth for a narrower focus on getting people into good bedtime habits.
Hatch just made it onto the lower end of Inc. Magazine’s 5,000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in North America. It sits in spot number 3,083.
