DuPont unveils complete direct lithium extraction portfolio for lithium producers

DLE removes lithium directly from underground saltwater brines instead of relying on large evaporation ponds

DuPont (NYSE: DD) has launched a complete direct lithium extraction (DLE) product portfolio, expanding its push into advanced lithium processing as producers seek faster and more efficient ways to supply the growing electric vehicle and energy storage markets.

On Wednesday, the company introduced more than 20 products covering the full lithium extraction process. Additionally, the portfolio combines lithium-selective sorbents, membranes and ion exchange resins into one integrated platform. DuPont said customers can adopt the complete system or choose individual technologies that match their specific brine resources and production goals.

Unlike traditional lithium production, DLE removes lithium directly from underground saltwater brines instead of relying on large evaporation ponds or hard rock mining. The approach aims to recover lithium more quickly while improving efficiency and reducing land requirements in many applications.

DuPont designed the new portfolio to address different brine temperatures and chemical compositions. However, lithium producers often face widely varying conditions that require customized processing rather than a standard solution.

The portfolio includes AmberSorb adsorbents that selectively capture lithium from both high- and low-temperature brines. It also features FilmTec LiNE nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes, including low salt rejection reverse osmosis technology that helps concentrate lithium to higher levels.

Further, the company incorporated IntegraTec and Inge ultrafiltration modules alongside AmberLite ion exchange resins. These technologies work together to improve lithium recovery, increase purity and raise final lithium concentration throughout the extraction process.

According to DuPont, integrating every stage into one flowsheet allows engineers to optimize the entire operation instead of treating each processing step independently.

Developers view DLE as an important alternative

Senior R&D Laureate Martin Deetz said direct lithium extraction depends heavily on each brine’s chemistry, temperature and competing minerals. He explained that combining sorbents, membranes and ion exchange technologies within a single process framework helps improve overall system performance rather than optimizing individual components in isolation.

Additionally, Deetz said many lithium companies want to move from laboratory testing to commercial production as quickly as possible. He said DuPont supports that goal through process modelling, pilot testing and customized engineering designed around each customer’s specific resource.

The company also provides laboratory testing using customers’ actual brine samples through its global research and development network. Consequently, producers can evaluate performance before building larger commercial facilities and reduce uncertainty during project development.

Demand for lithium continues to increase as automakers expand electric vehicle production and utilities. Developers view DLE as an important alternative because it can unlock lithium resources that traditional methods may struggle to develop.

Meanwhile, companies across the lithium sector continue investing in new extraction technologies that improve recovery rates while lowering water use, energy consumption or processing time. Technology providers increasingly compete by offering integrated processing systems instead of individual products.

DuPont also hosted an educational webinar last month, explaining how customized DLE technologies can improve lithium yield and purity. The session focused on tailoring extraction systems to different brine characteristics while demonstrating the company’s testing, modelling and pilot capabilities for customers evaluating commercial projects.

The DLE market is rapidly expanding

The global direct lithium extraction market is valued at approximately USD$1.6 billion in 2026. Industry forecasts anticipate growth to between USD$4.4 billion and USD$5.7 billion over the next decade.

The technology has attracted increasing attention as demand for lithium rises alongside electric vehicle adoption and grid-scale energy storage.

Companies across the lithium sector have accelerated investment in DLE in recent years. They view it as a way to unlock previously uneconomic resources while improving recovery rates and supporting the expansion of global battery supply chains.
