A renowned therapist and his friends have created a self help app that aims to utilize decades of cognitive behavioural therapy and psychiatry research.

“Feeling Great” just made its debut in the United States on Android and iOS. It is uncertain when it will become available in Canada and elsewhere.

The AI-powered app’s creators claim that it can reduce negative feelings and boost a user’s self esteem. In addition to a chatbot, it features a series of interactive courses.

The app was created by Dr. David Burns, a prominent psychiatrist and author of the acclaimed book Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy.

Two others assisted with its creation too. That is Jeremy Karmel, a former growth director at DoorDash Inc (Nasdaq: DASH); and Matt Pierce, co-founder of the healthcare software company Trusted Health.

“I’ve been dreaming about this app for 45 years,” Burns says, “but it’s way beyond my wildest dreams.”

The chatbot’s therapy methods are based on discoveries from over four decades of Burns’s psychiatry experience.

“I am very excited that we have created an electronic tool that doesn’t just reduce feelings of depression,” Burns told TechCrunch, “it reduces seven negative feelings simultaneously.”

This mobile application has a 1-week free trial but will cost an individual US$99 per year afterward.

Burns has sold over seven million copies of his mood therapy book. It has 4.4 stars, based on over 8,200 reviews, on Amazon.com Inc (Nasdaq: AMZN).

“With interactive courses and a chatbot providing empathetic support, Feeling Great is here to help you navigate and improve your emotional well-being,” the company said on LinkedIn Thursday.

Furthermore, Karmel says they have created an evaluation framework that will determine if AI is adequately understanding app users.

Feeling Great raises US$8 million in seed funding round

Burns and his amigos just pooled substantial capital to propel the app and its future capabilities. They currently plan to integrate long-term memory storage, a voice feature and an anonymous mode.

Learn Capital, Treble Capital, Lux Ventures and others assisted with the fundraising.

Wysa, Sonia, Yana and Woebot Health are some of Feeling Great’s competitors that have also created AI-powered therapy apps.

Many other tech developers have been excelling at using AI to gain an enhanced understanding of neuroscience, human thought processes, physical health and overall well-being too. Ambience Healthcare, VERSES AI Inc. (CBOE: VERS) (OTCQB: VRSSF) and meQuilibrium are some notable ones.
