bioAffinity Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: BIAF) continues to expand its intellectual property footprint, with its latest step into Asia highlighting a drive beyond the United States into regions where lung cancer remains a major challenge.
Shares rose by more than 63 per cent on the Nasdaq Thursday when the company announced the grant of a Hong Kong patent for its CyPath Lung test. Titled “System and Method for Determining Lung Health,” the patent covers the method of labelling cells in a sputum/phlegm sample with specific markers and analysing them to predict the chance of lung cancer.
It joins a 2025 Chinese patent and strengthens protection across Asia, a region that accounts for nearly two thirds of worldwide lung cancer cases and sees about 1.6 million new diagnoses each year. This latest grant builds on 16 other international patents and a series of protections already secured for the laboratory-developed test in the United States, covering key markets such as Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico and Singapore.
The announcement follows other important steps for CyPath Lung. In early September, the company said it plans to extend the test to monitor people who have already been treated for lung cancer, helping doctors watch for any return of the disease without relying solely on repeated scans. Earlier in the year it also launched a large study involving 2,000 patients at veterans’ and military sites to gather further evidence of the test’s value.
These advances form part of a broader evolution in lung cancer screening, where artificial intelligence is helping doctors detect problems earlier and with greater clarity. bioAffinity applies AI to analyse complex patterns in cells from sputum samples and flag signs of cancer.
Other lung cancer screening players have been employing the emerging technology too. Median Technologies SA (EPA: ALMDT) (FRA: 4ZG) uses AI in its eyonis system to examine scan images, detect lung spots and classify them as probably harmless or suspicious. Its system recently gained both FDA clearance and European approval. Another, RevealDx, likewise relies on artificial intelligence in its RevealAI-Lung software to score the risk of nodules found on scans and guide follow-up decisions after receiving FDA 510(k) clearance earlier this year.
Breath Diagnostics, meanwhile, is a company that takes a different route. It feeds data from a single exhaled breath into machine learning models that recognise chemical patterns linked to lung cancer. Collectively these methods are expanding the range of practical options available to clinicians.
