Super League Enterprise Inc (NASDAQ: SLE) shares skyrocketed on Aug. 18. The stock surged as much as 140 per cent intraday from its previous close near US$3, briefly topping US$7 before settling around an 80 per cent gain by the close.
The spark came from news that Metaplanet Inc (OTCMKTS: MTPLF) (TYO: 3350) will invest roughly US$134.6 million in Super League. Tokyo-listed Metaplanet is one of the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holders with 43,000 BTC, and will contribute 2,100 Bitcoin plus US$2.5 million in cash. In return it receives a controlling stake of around 95.7 per cent of Super League’s common stock, preferred shares and warrants. Super League will rename itself Superplanet and keep its Nasdaq listing under the new ticker SUPA. Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to shareholder approval.
The incentive for Metaplanet appears to be access to U.S. public markets and a cheaper, deeper pool of capital to fund further Bitcoin buying via a Nasdaq-traded vehicle.
Super League currently runs a gaming media and advertising business that helps brands reach the global audience of video game players. Metaplanet specialises in Bitcoin-based financial products and has built one of the largest public corporate Bitcoin treasuries from Japan.
Once the deal completes, Superplanet will serve as Metaplanet’s US Bitcoin treasury platform. It will hold the 2,100 BTC at closing, retain the gaming business as a separate segment, and aim to raise further funds in American markets to buy more Bitcoin. The two listed platforms will compound a single group Bitcoin position across the United States and Japan. Metaplanet’s shares in Superplanet cannot be sold for five years.
The rally was driven by the sudden injection of Bitcoin assets into a tiny company whose market value had been only a few million dollars. Risks remain though. It is very concerning that existing Super League shareholders will be heavily diluted to a minority stake of roughly 4 per cent. The deal still needs stockholder and regulatory approval and could face delays. Super League’s gaming operation has also faced sharp losses in the past, resulting in share price declines. Bitcoin itself remains volatile, so the treasury’s value can swing sharply.
On Reddit’s Metaplanet forum, users reacted with optimism, calling the move a proper entry into U.S. capital markets and posting messages such as the classic “HODL” and rocket emojis.
This milestone fits the broader picture of Bitcoin sentiment improving modestly from recent fear levels, but caution still persists. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index sentiment metric recently sat in the low 30s before rising into the mid-40s this month, still in a fearful state but showing signs of recovery. U.S. inflation data left Bitcoin largely unmoved following the release of the July U.S. Consumer Price Index figures (which met forecasts), underscoring that wariness still prevails.
Since April, a small team inside Metaplanet has been working on something we could not talk about. Today it is public.
