Drone leader Zipline surpasses 2M delivery milestone, raises US$600M

CEO Keller Cliffton says the company saves 17,000 lives per year by delivering medicine

Autonomous drone logistics leader Zipline International just hit a significant milestone. The company has now completed over two million commercial deliveries and secured US$600 million in fresh capital to propel its activities. Zipline’s valuation now sits at US$7.6 billion.

The latest funding round drew investments from prestigious venture capital firms such as Fidelity Management & Research Company, Valor Equity Partners and Baillie Gifford.

These latest funds will fuel Zipline’s next growth phase by enabling the company to scale up its emission-free drone operations across the United States and abroad.

The two million mark underscores Zipline’s operational leadership in the drone sector. To date, the tech company has transported over 20 million items without any major injuries.

In the U.S., the number of deliveries has been rising by an average of 15 per cent every week for the past seven months. Three minutes is the median flight time for each shipment.

Partnerships, such as one of scale with Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) (ETR: WMT) in Texas, are enabling speedy delivery of retail, food and healthcare merchandise through orders placed on the Zipline app.

Founded in 2014, Zipline started out in Rwanda two years later delivering blood and medical supplies to remote locations.

The company has since made significant progress with its mission of creating a logistics system that serves all people equally. Zipline now operates in eight countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Japan and certain American states. In a recent interview, CEO Keller Cliffton claimed that the company saves about 17,000 lives per year and serves approximately 5,000 healthcare facilities.

Aside from medical products, retail items and food, Zipline now handles agriculture products and animal health goods.

Going forward, Zipline plans to start operating its electric drones in Houston, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona in the immediate future. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego is happy about the upcoming launch. She thinks it will bolster the city’s status as a tech hub while making life easier for residents.
