‘Give a Breath’ 5K run raises lung cancer awareness in Canadian cities next month

Ottawa and Calgary are new participants this year

A five-kilometre charity run created to promote lung cancer awareness will have a couple new participating cities at this year’s event. Ottawa and Calgary will be joining the pack on Jun. 7 to “Give a Breath” in the fight against the disease.

This run has been ongoing since 2019 and has steadily collected more participants. The first was held at Whitemud Park in Edmonton.

Vancouver will be running for the third time next month.

“We’re back with the highly anticipated Give a Breath event, and this time, we’re expanding!” said Lung Cancer Canada, the Toronto-based charitable organization that helps organize it. Give a Breath has raised C$350,000 for lung cancer research to date.

“By coming together as a community, we are making a real difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating disease.”

In an interview with Global News on Thursday, Give a Breath founder and lung cancer survivor Tim Monds explained the importance of the fundraiser.

“It’s more than just a 5K to us,” Monds said. “It’s about a community demanding change, looking for greater research and opportunities for patients.”

The charitable event has attracted major sponsors like Compugen Ltd (NASDAQ: CGEN), Merck & Co Inc (NYSE: MRK) and AstraZeneca plc (NASDAQ: AZN). Registration costs C$45 nationwide and there will be music and prizes at the end.

Giving just OneBreath could potentially save your life

The event’s name brings to mind the importance that a single breath can potentially have.

Like those responsible for creating the Give a Breath charity run, the medical technology company Breath Diagnostics is passionate about fighting lung cancer and saving lives.

This lung cancer screening specialist has created a highly accurate breath test used to detect the disease called OneBreath. Its accuracy has been validated in multiple clinical trials with over 800 patients.

As lung cancer accounts for about 20 per cent of cancer deaths worldwide, non-invasive and convenient testing modalities like OneBreath have the potential to boost screening uptake and prevent fatal lung cancer progression through timely intervention. In Canada alone, more than 20,000 people die from it every year.

Like the charitable run organized by Monds and Lung Cancer Canada, Breath Diagnostics is also giving the public an opportunity to join the fight against this terrible disease by becoming shareholders.
