Calibre Mining supports future mining industry workers at Newfoundland science fair

Six schools in the province competed at the Gander contest last week

Calibre Mining Corp (TSE: CXB) (OTCMKTS: CXBMF) (FRA: WCLA) recently sponsored a mining industry-themed science fair contest for Newfoundland youth. It was held last week at a curling club in Gander.

The event occurred next door to the Central MinEx Mineral Industry Showcase at the town’s community centre. The provincial government supported this mining conference with a contribution of C$20,000.

At least six schools from Central Newfoundland participated in the science expo. They put together displays to educate attendees about asbestos safety, the mineral makeup of volcanoes, mine site erosion, e-waste recycling and other topics related to minerals and metals found in the province.

“We believe youth are our future,” said Calibre’s Social Compliance and Reporting Lead, Courtney Rowsell, in a statement provided to the CBC. “So having them involved, having them learning about mining, finding out about careers in mining, bringing them into a space where they can learn from each other and learn about different aspects of the industry is very important to us.”

Calibre’s Valentine Gold Mine is a cornerstone asset for Newfoundland’s mining industry. Production will begin at the site next quarter. It will produce about 200,000 gold ounces annually and create numerous employment opportunities for locals.

Calibre engages with Newfoundland community in multiple ways

Aside from sponsoring local events, providing scholarships to students, engaging with schools in the community through educational initiatives and employing Newfoundland residents, Calibre has taken a particular interest in protecting the environment near its gold project.

The gold producer has a protection and mitigation plan to minimize its impact on a caribou herd that regularly migrates through the Valentine property. Additionally, Calibre has a rigorous water management scheme in place and does everything it can to protect local plant life in the area.

Calibre also has a partnership with the Women in Resource Development Corporation and its charitable arm STEMforGIRLS. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. Members of the corporation were in attendance at the recent science fair event.

“From exploring mining tech displays to cheering on the talented participants in the MinEx Science Fair, it was a day packed with inspiration and connection,” the organization said on social media this week.

The STEM charity focuses on helping girls and gender-diverse youth find worthwhile career opportunities in the province.

“We were especially proud to see girls showcasing their talents, presenting innovative projects and proving that the future of mining and STEM is bright [and diverse]!”
