Virtual reality headset company XRHealth wins medtech innovation award

Therapeutic content for veterans is one of the company’s specialities

VR tech developer XRHealth just announced that it has received the 2026 MedTech Breakthrough Telehealth Innovation Award.

MedTech Breakthrough, an independent organization that recognizes advancements in digital health and medical technology, selected the company from over 5,000 nominations worldwide. Judges evaluated entries on innovation, performance, ease of use, functionality, value and overall impact.

XRHealth stood out for its platform that combines virtual reality therapy with telehealth delivered by licensed clinicians. Patients use the system at home for conditions such as chronic pain, stroke recovery, rehabilitation and mental health challenges.

The VR technology immerses users in controlled environments that support evidence-based techniques like mindfulness, relaxation and cognitive exercises while clinicians monitor their progress remotely.

The platform is remarkable because it integrates FDA-registered VR tools into telehealth procedures. Clinicians prescribe and oversee sessions and the system collects data to adjust treatments.

In March, XRHealth also ranked in third place on Fast Company’s list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies in the augmented and virtual reality category.

A decade in the making

XRHealth began operations around 2016 when founder Eran Orr, a former Israeli Air Force pilot, experienced challenges during his own rehabilitation from a neck injury. He saw opportunities to apply VR to improve therapy outcomes.

The company, initially focused on physical rehabilitation, eventually expanded into cognitive and behavioural health applications.

Over time, XRHealth registered its VR applications as medical devices with the FDA. The platform operates as an FDA-registered system and specific components qualify as durable medical equipment.

This regulatory status allows healthcare professionals to prescribe the tech with greater confidence and supports reimbursement pathways for those who need it.

Veteran-founded, veteran-focused

XRHealth directs significant effort toward supporting veterans. The company ships pre-configured VR headsets to veterans’ homes along with technical setup assistance and ongoing support.

Programs intend to address pain management, stress reduction and behavioural health issues such as PTSD, anxiety and trauma.

Veterans access dedicated VR environments for guided relaxation, breathwork, mindfulness and exposure techniques in a controlled setting. The platform also includes “Innerworld,” an anonymous virtual community where veterans join peer support groups.

These sessions teach practical coping skills. Innerworld has served thousands of veterans and gained validation from multiple VA medical centres since 2024.

“After I started Innerworld it significantly reduced my anxiety,” said one veteran last month. “Just having the support and being able to talk to people had a positive impact on me.”
