A Vancouver suburb known for its lack of cannabis dispensaries will be hosting a marijuana-palooza of sorts next month at a local art centre.

The upcoming “Summer Sesh” is a collaboration between the Craft Cannabis Association of BC, the Licensed Retail Cannabis Council of BC and HOWBOUTTHIS Events. It will be held Sept. 12 – Sept. 14.

“Summer Sesh is a three-day event featuring policy discussions, a business trade show, charity gala, speed networking and consumption friendly experiences,” hosts described online. There will be food trucks, dab bars, a theatre, over 30 brands showcasing their goods and various other cannabis fest amenities.

Day number one will feature presentations on sampling in British Columbia and the market for infused beverages.

The second day will include an educational talk on concentrates, a lecture on cannabis tourism, a sampling event with a bouncy castle and various other activities.

Lastly, the third day will include discussions on outdoor-grown pot, the hemp industry, niche chronic markets and other topics.

“We are excited to bring together industry leaders and policymakers to shape the future of cannabis and continue advancing our sector with innovation,” HOWBOUTTHIS founder Brittney Guthrie said. Tickets can be purchased here.

City Council rejects proposal to relinquish ban

Richmond has had a hardline stance on prohibiting pot dispensaries within city limits since before legalization in 2018.

The most recent request to reconsider the ban in May was rejected by City Council members. Residents currently rely on delivery or cannabis stores in municipalities like Vancouver and White Rock.

“The City of Richmond has chosen to prohibit the retail sale of cannabis,” Richmond’s website says. “The city will vigorously enforce its bylaws should any retail cannabis outlet attempt to operate.”

Neighbouring Surrey recently approved a plan to allow up to a dozen dispensaries within city limits following a long-standing ban like Richmond. These will soon be set up in its six communities.
