Mondo Robotics creates durable acrobat robot for filming skateboarding

‘Beni’ can shoot you from multiple angles, over diverse terrain, at up to 18 mph

Mondo Robotics, a California tech startup, has come up with one of the coolest robotic creations the world has ever seen.

“Beni” is the first all-terrain camera robot that can automatically follow people around over diverse terrain and film their activities in 4K. The cute autonomous little guy is capable of jumping up stairs, doing back or side flips and capturing users from different angles at up to 18 miles per hour. He has two sets of wheels for indoor and outdoor movement.

Beni started attracting social media attention in late May and has since become a popular topic among robotics enthusiasts. Once he becomes available to the masses, following completion of an imminent Kickstarter campaign that is currently accepting reservations, the wheeled camera bot will be of particular value to skateboarders who want to film their tricks without needing another person. Riders can finally capture clean lines and stunts solo as Beni races alongside them. Those who reserve will be able to get the self-balancing miniature robot for US$499.

Beni’s settings can be adjusted via a remote or through the Mondo smartphone app, offering easy control over speed, framing styles and modes. His batteries will last 1.5 hours each before needing to be swapped. He even has an auto-editing feature for his footage that can smartly cuts clips, highlight key moments and create ready-to-share reels. Users will be able to customise his attire too, including with an assortment of neat hats.

What makes Beni truly special is his smart, predictive tracking system. Using advanced AI, he anticipates your next move, gliding effortlessly across sand, grass, pavement or uneven trails while keeping you perfectly framed.

Beyond skating, adventure seekers, hikers and families will surely love him for documenting everything from backyard fun to wilderness trips. His nimble flips aren’t just flashy, they let him grab unique low and side perspectives.

Though promising, it remains to be seen how well Beni handles crowded skateparks or sudden obstacles that confuse his pathfinding.
