Lucid Diagnostics announces 11,991‑patient EsoGuard study publication

Collection succeeded in 94.7 per cent of patients, but the retrospective analysis measures feasibility rather than comparative cancer outcomes.

Cell collection succeeded in 94.7 per cent of patients as Lucid Diagnostics Inc. NASDAQLUCD announced on Tuesday the publication of an 11,991-patient EsoGuard study. Among collected samples, 93.1 per cent produced a positive or negative assay result.

The paper, published Oct. 29 in Diagnostics, retrospectively examined testing between January 2023 and June 2024. It adds evidence about the feasibility and tolerability of screening with the company's swallowable collection device, rather than a randomized comparison of cancer outcomes.

Lucid is a New York-based small-cap diagnostics company commercializing testing for esophageal precancer in patients at risk, including people with chronic heartburn. EsoGuard analyzes DNA changes in cells obtained using its EsoCheck collection device.

Shares of NASDAQLUCD closed at US$0.41 on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. EST, before Tuesday's announcement. The publication follows Lucid's report that Medicare payments have begun, with its next financial update scheduled for Nov. 12.

Collection Success Leaves Diagnostic Questions Open

The study reported successful cell collection in 11,355 patients, with procedures averaging less than two minutes. No device-related adverse events were reported during the study period.

Of those collected samples, 10,566 yielded a binary assay result. Among those results, 17.8 per cent were positive, suggesting Barrett's esophagus, the precursor condition the screening approach seeks to identify.

That positivity rate is not a confirmed disease-detection rate: the paper describes positive results as directing patients toward endoscopy for confirmation and staging. Collection success and assay yield also do not measure sensitivity or specificity against an endoscopic reference standard.

The retrospective analysis included procedures performed by Lucid personnel. Procedures performed by patients' own physicians or affiliated staff were excluded because deidentified data were not readily available, limiting how directly the findings describe independent clinical practice.

Patient-experience data came from a voluntary survey, adding a participation limitation to the satisfaction findings. The paper describes EsoCheck as an FDA 510(k)-cleared collection device under K230339; the publication is not an approval of the EsoGuard assay or an FDA endorsement of this study's design.

"With EsoGuard now fully reimbursed by Medicare nationwide, efficient and scalable clinical implementation will be critical as we accelerate commercialization across diverse clinical settings in the coming months," Lucid chief executive Lishan Aklog said in Tuesday's release.

Medicare Payments Put Adoption In Focus

A broader screening peer, Guardant Health, Inc. NASDAQGH, described expanded coverage for its FDA-approved Shield colorectal-cancer blood test in its Sept. 1 release. The tests address different diseases, so the Lucid findings establish no comparative performance advantage.

The broader biotechnology backdrop was weaker: the iShares Biotechnology ETF NASDAQIBB closed at US$213.79, down 1.76 per cent, on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. EST.

Lucid said on Oct. 22 it had begun receiving Medicare payments at US$1,938.01 per test for claims submitted through one of its laboratories. It also closed a US$15 million convertible preferred share placement on Oct. 21 to support commercial operations, working capital and general corporate purposes.

The operational evidence gives Lucid another document for discussions with clinicians and health systems, while payment collections and test orders will determine the revenue contribution. Publication itself establishes neither new insurance coverage nor commercial sales.

Lucid's Aug. 13 financial release reported second-quarter revenue of US$1.5 million and cash of US$33.4 million at June 30. The October financing announcement said it extended the cash runway without specifying a funding-through date.

The Nov. 12 business update will include third-quarter financial results. It is the next scheduled checkpoint for test demand, recognized revenue and the company's funding position.
