BWX Technologies wins about US$189M Navy nuclear fuel contract
The Erwin, Tennessee, unit will make reactor fuel for the naval propulsion program, with work scheduled for completion in August 2027.

Work on an approximately US$189 million Navy nuclear fuel contract is scheduled for completion in August 2027. BWX Technologies, Inc. NYSEBWXT, the Lynchburg, Virginia, nuclear manufacturer that supplies reactors and fuel for naval vessels, announced the award on Oct. 1. Its Erwin, Tennessee, subsidiary will make and deliver the fuel for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
BWXT shares NYSEBWXT closed at US$137.00 as of 4 p.m. EDT on Sept. 30. That close preceded the Oct. 1 announcement, so it is a reference price rather than a market reaction to the award. The release gives no price per fuel unit or count of reactors covered.
Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc., the BWXT subsidiary named in the award, will perform the work at its Erwin facility. BWXT says its fuel and reactors power Virginia and Columbia-class submarines as well as Ford-class aircraft carriers, among other Navy vessels. The contract concerns reactor fuel; the Oct. 1 notice does not assign it to a particular new ship or say how much fuel will be delivered.
The Oct. 1 notice does not provide an updated backlog balance or split the roughly US$189 million between fiscal 2026 and 2027 revenue. It gives no separate funding figure. Work under the award is scheduled for completion in August 2027, subject to the performance and funding risks the company identified.
Erwin Work Is Scheduled For Completion In August 2027
Nuclear Fuel Services processes highly enriched uranium for U.S. naval reactors, according to BWXT's Oct. 1 release. The company says the Erwin plant has made Navy fuel for more than 60 years and is a Category 1 facility licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Those details place the new award in a long-running defense manufacturing operation, with a regulator overseeing the site.
An earlier fuel award was approximately US$174 million, awarded Sept. 10, 2025, and disclosed Oct. 30 of that year. BWXT said work on that contract had already started and targeted summer 2026 for completion. The Oct. 1 notice identifies a new contract but does not say that the older award's work was extended or rolled over.
“This contract underscores the Navy’s confidence in our decades of disciplined performance and our role in delivering the fuel that enables unmatched endurance, mobility and mission readiness across the fleet,” Howard Markle, president of BWXT's Nuclear Operations Group, said in the Oct. 1 release.
Government Operations Reported US$601.3 Million In June-Quarter Revenue
BWXT's Aug. 3 financial release reported US$601.3 million in Government Operations revenue for the quarter ended June 30, up two per cent from the comparable period. The company attributed that growth partly to naval propulsion and special materials, while lower advanced nuclear volumes offset part of the increase. Those segment sales include more than the fuel now covered by the Navy award.
Consolidated June-quarter revenue was US$901.6 million, an 18 per cent rise from a year earlier, BWXT reported on Aug. 3. The company then raised its fiscal 2026 revenue outlook to approximately US$3.8 billion, including a newly closed commercial nuclear components acquisition. Its Oct. 1 fuel release did not revise that outlook or say what portion of the award, if any, was already assumed in it.
The submarine market also has orders further along the vessel supply chain. HII NYSEHII, the Virginia shipbuilder whose Newport News division builds nuclear-powered submarines, said on July 29 that Navy contract modifications support nine more Virginia-class and five more Columbia-class boats. HII's disclosure covers ship construction and infrastructure; BWXT's Oct. 1 release does not connect its fuel award to those particular modifications.
The site's earlier coverage of a commercial reactor project sits in a different part of the nuclear market. BWXT's new customer is the Navy propulsion program, and its Oct. 1 release identifies no electricity buyer, megawatt capacity or data centre contract. That distinction keeps a defense fuel order from being counted as a sale into the civilian power buildout.

The Contract Notice Leaves Backlog Impact Unquantified
BWXT's Oct. 1 announcement states a contract value, but it does not disclose the award date, a post-award backlog total or a schedule for recognizing the contract as revenue. The Aug. 3 financial release offers an earlier operating baseline, yet it cannot show how the subsequently announced award will flow through future quarters. The company expressly cautions that contract value may be an unreliable guide to future revenue.
The next dated milestone in BWXT's Oct. 1 contract notice is the scheduled completion of work in August 2027.
