A Slovenian AI startup headquartered in Michigan continues to enhance its unique bird feeder gadget’s capabilities.

Founded in 2020, Bird Buddy has created a device with a built-in camera that will identify different species of flying creatures that frequent your backyard.

Now, the tech startup has added the “Name That Bird” feature, which is part of its array of Nature Intelligence tools integrated into the gizmo this month. It will enable users to name and track individual birds, thereby creating a more personalized experience. The bird feeders use AI to identify their distinctive characteristics.

This development follows the company adding the Bird Buddy Explore feature last fall. The explore option, which will work in tandem with the bird tracking feature, enables people to view Bird Buddy camera feeds from around the world on their smartphone or computer regardless of whether they own one of the food dispensers.

Name That Bird is also capable of identifying other creatures that might be lurking around the home. Bird Buddy’s cam might point out some raccoons, or maybe a skunk. One might be able to save their favourite bird from a hungry street cat if they can rush home in time.

“Imagine naming your favourite Northern Cardinal Bob and getting notified whenever Bob pays you a visit,” CEO Franci Zidar said. “Well, now it’s possible.”

Bird Buddy’s feeder cameras detect over 1 million birds throughout the globe every day. Users will need to pay US$6 per month for the Bird Buddy Pro subscription to access the new features.

A world-renowned publication recently recognized the startup for its innovative technology.

“Buddy’s wi-fi-connected, battery-operated bird feeder has a discreet camera that snaps high-quality pictures and videos of your feathered friends and sends them right to your phone,” TIME author Pranav Dixit said in October.

“Even better, each image is processed through Bird Buddy’s own AI model, which can quickly identify over 1,000 species.”

This company isn’t the only one developing clever new AI tools that interact with the natural world. Others like VERSES AI Inc. (CBOE: VERS) (OTCQB: VRSSF), which is fine-tuning a biology and neuroscience-focused AI model called Genius, have been excelling in this regard.

Meanwhile, artificial intelligence-powered natural drug discovery has become quite popular as well recently. AI is slowly becoming more and more instrumental in the healthcare field too, enhancing our understanding of different diseases and the human body.

Bird Buddy has a series of other upcoming products and features in the works.
