Filmmakers have long sought to harness psychedelic visuals to uplift their audience into higher consciousness without the need for consuming any substances.
Soon, this desire will be showcased like never before during the conclusion of one of cinema’s most famous sagas. Alongside the release of the Dune: Part Three trailer this month, director Denis Villeneuve disclosed that his production included a small, dedicated “psychedelic unit.”
This tiny team of filmmakers were tasked with employing experimental and creative techniques. Their goal was to produce “crazy, insane footage” for the upcoming motion picture, as described by director Denis Villeneuve. This team was led by Canadian cinematographer Kristof Brandl and Villeneuve’s daughter Salomé. The film is now in the post-production phase and slated to be released on Dec. 18.
This approach is fitting considering that Frank Herbert’s original 1965 novel drew partial inspiration from the author’s own experiences with psilocybin mushrooms. An avid mushroom cultivator, Herbert confided to mycologist and psychedelics celebrity Paul Stamets that the Spice Melange depicted in the book emerged from his observations of the fungal life cycle and psychedelic “trips.” In the story, Spice Melange is the universe’s most precious substance. It expands consciousness, extends life and enables space travel.
Beyond its past and modern psychedelic roots, Dune teems with remarkable details. The novel, born from Herbert’s research into Oregon’s shifting sand dunes, won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards and stands as one of science fiction’s bestsellers. It received these prestigious literary accolades in 1966, the year after publication.
More recently, Villeneuve’s cinematic adaptations have grossed over a billion dollars combined, earning a total of eight Oscars thus far. Filmmakers, fans and sci-fi geeks now eagerly wait to see if the final segment of the trilogy will live up to their high expectations.
