Cambridge Sleep Sciences launches smart pillow for gaming nerds

If you’re gonna spend your whole day playing Counter Strike 2 you gotta be well rested

Sleep tech creator Cambridge Sleep Sciences announced the debut of a smart pillow for esports geeks last week. “Respawn stronger!”  the company says. It was formally unveiled in person at the Dubai Esports Arena in conjunction with a Counter Strike 2 tournament on Sept. 16.

The Tech Co Performance Pillow was developed in collaboration with Achieveminds, smart ring creator Ultrahuman and the recovery solutions specialist Tech Co Group. Achieveminds runs an esports player coaching platform. Tech Co has no online presence.

Cambridge has explained why it is an important product for gamers to have. The tech developer claims its patented “SleepEngine” sound technology can enable users to get 28 per cent more REM sleep and benefit from a 31 per cent reduction in time spent awake throughout the night.

These results were derived from sleep data insights provided by Ultrahuman’s Ring AIR wearable device, which can be paired with the pillow.

SleepEngine is comprised of psychoacoustic sounds with sinusoidal waveforms, as specified by Cambridge. Scientists and medical experts spent over a decade developing the sound tech, according to the company.

“One night of poor sleep slows reaction time by 38 milliseconds, which can be the difference between winning and losing in Counter Strike 2,” Cambridge highlighted. “Sleep deprivation drives riskier decisions, comparable to playing above the legal alcohol limit.”

Aside from Counter Strike 2, the sequel of one of the world’s most popular first-person shooter games, the world’s most played esports include Fortnite, League of Legends, Valorant and Dota 2.

“Smarter sleep means sharper performance,” said CEO Adam Rostom on social media. Although gaming appears to be the primary focus, Cambridge says athletes involved with physical sports can benefit from the pillow too.

“Thrilled to see our sleep technology now supporting athletes across both esports and real-world sports,” Rostom added. “Recovery is the hidden edge.”

The head rest device costs approximately US$680.
