British Columbia’s city of Burnaby will soon no longer be dominated by government-owned marijuana stores.
At a city council meeting on May 27, officials approved the jurisdiction’s first two privately held dispensaries.
Seed & Stone, a dispensary chain with multiple locations throughout the Lower Mainland, will be setting up pot shops in the northwest and southwest quadrants of the city.
“This decision represents more than just new locations,” said Seed & Stone CEO Vikram Sachdeva, “it’s a milestone for cannabis retail in BC and a recognition of thoughtful, community-driven operators.”
“A sincere thank you to Burnaby city staff, council and mayor for their leadership, transparency and commitment to responsible retail.”
When the new shops will be up and running was not specified in the council’s report. Residents will need to continue buying their weed from the two BC Cannabis Stores in the city or go elsewhere for the time being.
The latest Seed & Stone location to open its doors is situated in Coquitlam. A red ribbon was cut at the entrance to celebrate the occasion on Mar. 1.
British Columbia has one of the highest rates of cannabis usage in the country. Flower and edibles are the most popular products.
Cannabis grown in the province is so good that smokers throughout the entire world have heard of “BC bud.” British Columbia’s climate and fertile soil are ideal for cultivation.
No major cannabis producers are currently headquartered in Burnaby at the moment, but neighbouring Vancouver is home to several growers and extraction experts.
