The world’s most popular publishing software is now capable of using artificial intelligence to make you a custom-tailored website. Getting it made is free, but a membership is required to maintain it.
WordPress.com revealed its new AI website builder on Wednesday. It is currently only capable of making basic pages for bloggers, “side hustlers” and other creatives.
“While it isn’t quite ready to create e-commerce sites or sites that require complex integrations [but stay tuned!], the builder will create beautiful, functional websites in minutes,” the company specified.
The website maker just needs specifically written prompts to do its work. Those using the tool will be permitted to use 30 of these for free. Vague prompts may result in mediocre results, so being as descriptive as possible is essential.
“You need a website, not a new skill set,” WordPress.com said. “Instead of figuring out how to build a website from scratch, you can have a full-blown WordPress site that looks great and works seamlessly without the manual effort.”
Despite the appeal of getting a page designed quickly and “for free,” users will be required to purchase a hosting plan if they want to launch the site publicly with a domain name, etc.
WordPress.com aims to compete with leading AI-powered website developers like Israel’s Wix.com Ltd (NASDAQ: WIX) (FRA: W1X), the American company Squarespace and Lithuania-based Hostinger.
I'm impressed with the work the team has been doing to launch the new AI website builder on https://t.co/gUfiq3w2w2.
Makers can be happy knowing that when you publish on https://t.co/gUfiq3w2w2 you're not writing with a borrowed pen. We succeed when makers thrive. https://t.co/aFM9XZReW5

WordPress.com parent company lays off 16% of staff
The web page creation technology development follows Automattic deciding to make substantial cuts to its employee roster last week.
The 281 workers, spread throughout 90 countries, will be receiving a severance package and will get to keep their company laptops.
“Automattic has multiple products with world-touching potential in WordPress and beyond,” the announcement said. “In the coming weeks, we’ll share more about our path forward and how we’ll work together to strengthen our company.”
The California-based software developer also owns the social media company Tumblr, the WordPress e-commerce plugin WooCommerce, the online survey platform CrowdSignal (formerly PollDaddy) and acquired the AI startup WPAI last year.
The new AI software and last year’s acquisition highlight Automattic’s growing AI ambitions. WordPress was originally created in 2003 by Mike Little and Matt Mullenweg.
