Strategy Inc (NASDAQ: MSTR) bought 950 bitcoin for US$75.7 million in the week to Sept. 20, according to the Form 8-K it filed on Monday. The purchase ends a two week stretch in which the company bought none and takes its holding to 846,000 bitcoin. Over the same week it put US$174 million into buying back its own Stretch preferred stock, more than twice what it spent on bitcoin.

Shares rose 9.5 per cent to US$168.50 at the close in New York on Monday. Volume reached 41.9 million shares, about 1.8 times the average of the previous nine sessions, and the stock has traded between US$81.81 and US$365.21 over the past year.

Strategy paid an average of US$79,670 a coin, including fees and expenses. The whole holding cost US$63.80 billion, an average of US$75,416. At the US$85,332 bitcoin fetched on Coinbase early Tuesday it is worth about US$72.19 billion. The company sold no shares under its at-the-market program during the week, so the bitcoin came out of cash rather than new equity.

That buying had stopped for two reporting periods. Strategy told the regulator on Sept. 14 that it had bought and sold nothing between Sept. 8 and Sept. 13. Its Sept. 8 filing said the same of the period that began Aug. 31. Executive chairman Michael Saylor posted the new totals as the filing went out. Strategy filed under the MicroStrategy name until August 2025.

The buyback took 1,771,238 Stretch shares off the market, and another US$57.4 million went to preferred dividends and interest on debt. Strategy ended Sept. 20 with US$5.04 billion in the dollar reserve it keeps for those payments and US$1.05 billion in general cash. A further US$875.1 million remains available for purchases of its preferred securities.
