Somnee’s sleep headband makes Fast Company’s trending tech list

The New York media company has over 2 million followers on X

California’s sleep tech developer, Somnee, just had its wearable headband praised by a prominent American media company.

Fast Company has added the Somnee’s sleep aid device to the “Next Big Things in Tech 2024” list. It is one of 138 gadgets recognized by business magazine this year.

“We’re feeling incredibly honoured to win this prestigious Fast Company award and for the recognition of our pioneering closed-loop approach to helping people sleep,” chief executive, Tim Rosa, said in a social media post.

The publication says it is more impactful than other sleep headbands on the market that generally focus on solely providing sleep data.

“After several nights of measuring a user’s brainwave patterns, its band creates a personalized electrical stimulation pattern that’s meant to nudge the wearer toward their ideal sleep state,” Fast Company described on Tuesday.

Other top gadgets recognized include Neurable’s brainwave monitoring device; the Health Monitor App integrated into Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KRX: 005930) smartwatches; and the AI-powered app “Ollie,” which provides health insights for dogs by examining images of their poop.

Fast Company was founded in 1995 by two formers editors at the Harvard Business Review. That is, Bill Taylor and Alan Webber. Also, the billionaire publisher Mortimer Zuckerman. It focuses on entertainment, marketing, business and other topics.

A contributor for the renowned business publication, Shannon Ullman, gave the device an 8 out of 10. Testing sleep products is her specialty.

Ullman says she assessed it for about six weeks and that it started becoming more impactful about half way through that duration.

“I honestly felt that the headband helped me fall asleep faster,” she said. “If you’re looking to make a positive impact on your sleep, I would recommend giving Somnee a try.”

A writer at the San Francisco magazine SFGATE also gave the gadget a favourable review. Miles Walls says that it helped him get a better night’s rest.

“I can say with certainty that using Somnee helped me wind down and nod off faster,” he explained.

Sleep tech: a small but growing industry

Certain researchers have predicted that the market for devices like Somnee’s headband will expand considerably in the years to come.

Grand View Research, for instance, expects a 10.8 per cent compound annual growth rate for the sector for the remainder of the decade.

Meanwhile, Precedence Research anticipates even more robust growth at approximately 18.2 per cent. The Canadian-Indian firm expects the industry to have a US$113.1-billion-dollar valuation by 2033.
