Somnee, a California-based sleep technology creator, has pulled together US$10 million in a seed extension round led by a group of American and Canadian venture capital firms.
The funds will be used to help launch the latest generation of the company’s sleep wearable headband. This device has garnered attention from major companies and media outlets since Somnee’s founding eight years ago. Among the latest is the NBA Launchpad initiative, which partnered with the wearable maker in February to assess the gadget’s impact on professional basketball players.
“It’s an incredible validation of our science and technology [the fundraising],” CEO Tim Rosa said on social media, “and a moment of pride for our team as we prepare to reset and scale a new category of AI-powered neuro-tech wearables as a closed-loop sleep intervention.”
It works by using artificial intelligence and electroencephalography (EEG) sensors to scan a user’s brain activity and provide customized neurostimulation with electrical pulses. The headband is meant to be worn for 15 minutes before going to sleep to promote enhanced rest. The accompanying app will tell the wearer how their brain was functioning before and after putting it on.
“Somnee’s second‑generation Smart Sleep Headband and SmartSleep AI operating system map real‑time brain rhythms to deliver gentle neurostimulation that helps users fall asleep 2× faster, add 30+ minutes of restorative rest, and cut tossing by 33 per cent,” said fundraising participant Seaside Ventures, “all drug‑free and backed by 24 patents.”
Somnee has raised a total of US$24 million to date and plans to pull even more capital together in 2026. Fast Company recently praised the sleep tech developer’s headband and added the device to its “Next Big Things in Tech 2024” list.
“The big picture: investors are seeking to capitalize on Americans’ obsession with sleep health, following the popularity of Oura rings and smartwatches that track sleep patterns,” commented Axios reporter, Katherine Davis, on LinkedIn.
Somnee was founded by the neuroscience tech company StimScience in 2017.
“Our deep understanding of the neuroscience of sleep uniquely positions us to help solve the sleep health epidemic,” Somnee’s creator says.
