SNDL reports C$20M free cash flow as impairment widens quarterly loss
Adjusted operating income turned positive, but an insurance benefit lifted cash generation and the IFRS net loss reached C$50.8 million.

Record quarterly free cash flow of C$20 million accompanied a return to adjusted operating profit as SNDL Inc. CNSXSNDL NASDAQSNDL reported third-quarter results on Tuesday. Adjusted operating income reached C$5.2 million, while the reported net loss widened to C$50.8 million.
The Oct. 27 release attributed the operating loss largely to a C$52 million non-cash goodwill impairment in Cannabis Operations. Revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30 fell 2.5 per cent to C$238 million as weaker production and liquor sales outweighed growth in cannabis retail.
SNDL is an Edmonton-based cannabis producer and major Canadian liquor and cannabis retailer with an investment portfolio. Its combination of stores, manufacturing and investments means stronger retail performance can coexist with losses elsewhere in the business.
SNDL shares closed at US$1.27 on Nasdaq NASDAQSNDL at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Oct. 26, before the results were released. That closing price therefore predates the full earnings announcement.
Insurance Release Lifted Cash Generation
The cash-flow record included C$10.6 million from the initial unwinding of SNDL's captive insurance arrangement. More than half the headline figure consequently came from that benefit, which SNDL had already disclosed with preliminary results on Oct. 15.
Both free cash flow and adjusted operating income are non-IFRS measures without standardized definitions. The distinction is substantial: the third-quarter operating loss under IFRS was C$48.3 million, compared with C$11.1 million a year earlier.
The interim financial statements put the net loss at C$50.8 million, against C$13.3 million in the comparable quarter. Net cash provided by operating activities declined to C$18.6 million from C$31.7 million, despite the higher company-defined free cash flow.
Cash and equivalents fell by C$50.7 million during the quarter as SNDL made C$60.8 million of strategic U.S. investments. It also spent C$10 million repurchasing shares, showing how investment and capital returns absorbed liquidity despite the free-cash-flow surplus.
The Sept. 30 balance sheet carried C$132.5 million of cash and equivalents, plus C$8.2 million of restricted cash. It also listed current lease liabilities of C$35.7 million and non-current lease liabilities of C$126.6 million, obligations that remain alongside its cash reserves.
SNDL's Oct. 15 capital-allocation announcement outlined a possible substantial issuer bid of up to C$50 million, subject to approvals. Its existing repurchase program expires Nov. 20, and management intends to seek renewal, also subject to approvals.

Retail Gains Contrast With Production Weakness
Cannabis Retail revenue increased 0.7 per cent in SNDL's September quarter, while Cannabis Operations revenue declined 27.7 per cent. Liquor Retail revenue fell 3.3 per cent, although both retail divisions achieved record quarterly gross margins.
Management is initiating a strategic review of Cannabis Operations, including potential asset divestitures and productivity initiatives. It expects actions taken during the quarter to begin contributing to results in the fourth quarter.
“Cannabis Operations remained below expectations and recorded a non-cash impairment,” SNDL chief executive Zach George said in the release.
Canadian retail peer High Tide Inc. CVEHITI NASDAQHITI FRA2LYA reported on Sept. 14 free cash flow of C$7 million for its quarter ended July 31. Its same-store sales were flat against the prior year, illustrating the distinction between expanding a retail business and generating growth from existing locations.
Those figures cover a different quarter, and the companies' non-IFRS measures should not be treated as standardized comparisons. SNDL's own nine-month free cash flow was C$5.7 million, below C$7.7 million in the corresponding period of 2025.
The next scheduled event is SNDL's Oct. 27 earnings call at 10:00 a.m. EDT. Management is due to discuss the results and outlook, with the production review and capital-allocation plans among the issues for shareholders.
