Magic mushrooms have proved themselves useful for a variety of ailments, but if one decides to take too many when they are in a bad mental state the consequences can be dire.
An unfortunate 37-year-old Austrian man with a history of alcoholism and depression recently gobbled up a large quantity of the fungi. He was then sent into a psychosis and decided to take a few swings at his own trouser snake with a hatchet.
Thankfully, this is the only time this has ever happened and it will hopefully be the last.
“Under the influence of psilocybin, he decided to amputate his penis with a blunt axe, chopping the penile shaft into several pieces,” Austrian healthcare professionals described in the Mega Journal of Surgery. “The penile fragments were rescued in a jar but were contaminated with soil and dirty snow.”
Doctors were luckily able to sow him back up with some difficulty after sterilizing his genitalia pieces. Four months after the operation they reported that he was capable of getting an erection and that his urinary tract was functioning properly. They documented the unique occurrence in the surgery journal’s entry titled “Penile Replantation after Self-Amputation Following Psilocybin-Induced Drug Psychosis.”
Photos can be found in the journal in discussion and the Open Journal of Urology, but they are pretty grotesque. You’ll have to take it upon yourself to have a look if you are so inclined. Many of us have heard of the Penis Envy psilocybin strain but we sure ain’t envyin that penis.

Hatchet is novel, psilocybin-induced penis harm is not
Another extremely rare case of magic mushroom inspired genital damage occurred over a decade ago in Michigan.
A 41-year-old man was found naked and screaming near a local middle school in the middle of the night after ripping off part of his johnson. Reasoning for his self-harm remains a mystery and was never revealed in the media.
Police officers apprehended him and called an ambulance.
“In terms of vital signs, they were as low as they could go without being dead, I could only assume due to the blood loss and the shock and trauma to the body,” a Michigan police sergeant said in 2013.
It’s important to note that these extremely rare occurrences shouldn’t deter people from psilocybin. Thousands of individuals have had profound life changing experiences from the natural drug. All psychedelics can potentially be dangerous for the wrong people, in the wrong environment and in the wrong state of mind.
