The active ingredient in magic mushrooms has once again proven its ability to make life’s difficulties less miserable than they otherwise would be in multiple cases.
At this year’s Psychedelic Science conference in Denver, hosted by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, a researcher from Ohio State University presented data showcasing this finding.
His statistics showed that one dose of dried psilocybin fungi could relieve depression symptoms for a considerable duration.
“Most people who participated in our trial reported improvements in depression symptom intensity, or in the ways in which they experienced depression in their life, lasting up to five years after the trial,” said Alan Davis in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.
By most, he means 67 per cent of the 24-person cohort.
“Psychedelic Science was an incredibly meaningful event this year,” Davis added on social media last week.
The trial he is referring to took place in 2019 at the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The recent discovery presented at Psychedelic Science came from following up with participants from that study.
The pandemic-era analysis was published in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Psychiatry on Nov. 4, 2020.
“Once all of the patients had completed the four-week study, the psilocybin appeared to be four times more effective than traditional antidepressant medications,” said Angela Douglas, Davis’s fellow researcher from Ohio State’s Center for Psychedelic Drug Research & Education, in a LinkedIn post.
Another one of the most newsworthy items from the conference was Colorado Governor Jared Polis’s announcement that he would be pardoning citizens convicted of state level psilocybin possession offences.
The developments follow Ohio State’s psychedelic research centre revealing that it has established an online certificate program for people interested in the history, cultural landscape and therapeutic applications of psychoactive substances.
