New Mexico follows in Oregon & Colorado’s footsteps by legalizing psilocybin therapy

Multiple veterans helped push for the legislation to be passed

On Apr. 7, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill into law that will permit the physician-recommended usage of magic mushrooms for treating severe health conditions.

New Mexico has now joined Oregon and Colorado in legalizing psilocybin-assisted therapy. The state is committing up to US$4 million for the implementation of its Medical Psilocybin Act provisions over the next two years, as specified in Senate Bill 219.

The manner in which the state’s psilocybin program received approval differed from the other two states where the substance has been legalized in that it received broad support in the New Mexico Senate and House of Representatives. Oregon and Colorado had their psilocybin programs approved through voter ballot measures, unlike New Mexico, which authorized its program through legislation.

It passed through the Senate 33-4 and moved through the House 56-8 last month before reaching Grisham’s desk.

This milestone received praise from psilocybin advocates and the public mushroom enthusiasts Numinus Wellness Inc (OTCMKTS: NUMIF) and Hypha Labs Inc (OTCMKTS: FUNI).

“Well, this is pretty awesome!” said Jim Yue, manager of the Oregon psilocybin clinic operator Vital Reset L.L.C. “Thanks to all the veterans, people and organizations that helped make this happen.”

Numinus also highlighted the unique nature of the news on social media.

“Yesterday, New Mexico made history as the first state legislature to create legal psilocybin access!” Numinus said. “The Medical Psilocybin Act, SB 219, recognizes what indigenous cultures have known for centuries – these medicines have profound healing potential.”

Moreover, Hypha Labs chief executive Stone Douglass thinks it is only a matter of time before more states follow suit and the psychedelic fungi has its federal status as a Schedule I substance relinquished.

“We believe as the legislative dominoes fall that other jurisdictions will see the successes in places like New Mexico as a template for their own jurisdictions,” Douglass said.

Netflix stars acknowledged the important milestone

Famous mushroom man Paul Stamets was also quick to share the “breaking news!” on social media platforms. He is known for appearing in the Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX) (ETR: NFC) documentary Fantastic Fungi.

Additionally, Michael Pollan, star of the streaming service’s psychedelics series How to Change Your Mind, mentioned the remarkable development on X.

The deadline for full implementation of New Mexico’s psilocybin program is Dec 31., 2027.
