Medtech investment firm NovoMed PARTNERS launches in California

Its founders’ oversaw CathWorks’ US$585M takeover by Medtronic

For early-stage medtech founders, selecting the right partners demands careful thought and patience. They often discover that hasty alliances can stall progress worse than technical hurdles. Many promising devices falter not through lack of innovation but because operators fail to secure proper support during the fragile launch phase.

To combat this pervasive issue, NovoMed PARTNERS has now officially debuted as a platform that invests in, advises and connects medical technology ventures. The Newport Beach firm aims to accelerate growth for companies across their lifecycle by combining capital deployment, strategic guidance and ecosystem networking.

This new initiative is not risk-free though. The medtech advisory and investment space already features numerous operator-backed groups, so differentiation may prove difficult. These include firms like Avania, ZS Associates and Lumira Ventures. NovoMed’s four-person founding team will have to demonstrate that it can execute portfolio building, advisory work and content generation without diluting focus or creating conflicts between investment and consulting roles.

Feasibility remains untested beyond considerations about the individuals’ prior successes. The announcement did not specify how much capital NovoMed has raised or is actively deploying.

Founders’ credentials and early activity

The leadership team draws credibility from steering CathWorks through its US$585 million acquisition by Medtronic PLC (NYSE: MDT) (FRA: 2M6) earlier this year.

Ramin Mousavi, former CathWorks chief executive, now serves as founder, chairman and chief executive officer of NovoMed. He is joined by co-founders Mike Feher as chief financial officer, Fabian Ngo as chief strategy officer and Natalie Sickler as chief business officer — all former CathWorks leaders.

Collectively they claim to have decades of experience in commercialisation, clinical evidence generation and exits.

“The CathWorks chapter proved what is possible,” said Mousavi, who was inducted into the UC Irvine UCI Samueli School of Engineering Hall of Fame in May. “Now, a New Dawn begins…”

Possible scope across medtech niches

NovoMed PARTNERS has not yet disclosed specific sector preferences, leaving open a wide range of potential activity. It could theoretically support lung-cancer screening tech companies like Breath Diagnostics, early-stage players in implantable neuromodulation for chronic pain or robotics developers creating wearable devices for post-stroke rehabilitation. Whether the new platform can translate its founders’ single successful exit into broader impact across these varied sub-sectors remains an open question.

The firm will sponsor Life Science Intelligence’s upcoming European Emerging Medtech Summit in Barcelona this autumn, signalling an intent to engage the international community early.

“We have the opportunity to work alongside entrepreneurs, investors, clinicians, and innovators to help build companies that bring meaningful technologies to physicians and patients around the world,” Ngo stated.
