Manitoba residents will soon no longer be prohibited from cultivating recreational cannabis in the comfort of their own home.
On May 1, the provincial government will be lifting its ban on homegrown marijuana and allowing adult Manitobans to cultivate up to four pot plants for personal use.
However, the new rules stipulate that only four ganja plants can be residing in a single residence. Three people growing a dozen in one person’s shack will not be permitted. Furthermore, they must be placed in an area that is inaccessible to children and those under the age of 19.
“I’m so pleased to learn that FINALLY, homegrown cannabis will be allowed in Manitoba,” one local resident commented on X.
As of next month, Quebec will be the only remaining Canadian province that prohibits residents from nurturing Mary Jane in the house.
“Manitoba NDP legislation lifting ban on homegrown recreational cannabis concerning; as there is no strategy as to how this will be taxed,” one parody X account wisecracked.
In other recent and related news, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries just sent out a memo to retailers notifying them that the wholesale markup on marijuana will be increasing by 2 per cent to 11 per cent in June. Manitoba distributors were also informed that they will be able to sell seeds as of Jun. 1.
Local firefighters are currently grappling with grass fires of a much more unpleasant nature than those on the front porch of Manitoban houses.
For the fiscal year ended Mar. 31, 2024, Manitoba sold over C$153 million worth of weed merchandise.
Prior to nationwide legalization in 2018, cannabis cultivation had been illegal in the province since 1938.
