Cannabinoid-infused pillowcases help nurses get improved rest

CBD has been known to aid people with insomnia by alleviating pain and anxiety

Pillowcases infused with cannabidiol (CBD) oil recently helped a group of sleep-deprived nurses get improved rest so they could be more focused on the job.

A study published in the journal Healthcare by Taiwanese researchers on Mar. 7 examined the impact of the cannabinoid on a group of 55 caregivers (82 per cent women, 18 per cent men). The assessment, titled Pilot Study on the Effect of Cannabidiol-Coated Fabric for Pillow Covers Improves the Sleep Quality of Shift Nurses, conclusively determined that saturating pillowcases with CBD was impactful for its intended purpose.

“Using a CBD-coated pillow cover was found to enhance sleep duration in healthy individuals experiencing poor sleep,” they concluded in the entry. It helps improve sleep quality too, the researchers found.

The authors also pointed out that the cannabis sativa plant extract helped significantly alleviate anxiety in study participants. Fitbits were used to measure sleep quality during the investigation.

“By offering an alternative to traditional CBD consumption methods, such as oral ingestion or vaping, the CBD-coated pillow may minimize potential side effects while still delivering therapeutic benefits,” the authors explained.

“CBD Pillow” says that if you ingest the cannabis extract before bed it will start to leave your system within only a few hours. To combat this issue, the Camarillo-based sleep product developer created a proprietary system for extended micro-dosing and absorption.

“We designed the CBD Pillow using micro-encapsulation technology,” the cannabinoid sleep tech company explained. “This new patented process allows us to inject millions of micro-capsules of CBD into an incredibly comfortable pillow that release micro doses of CBD all night while you sleep.”

If the person resting their head on the pillow is having a hard time catching Z’s, CBD Pillow says the frequent movement will release more of the cannabinoid. The company’s memory foam pillow comes with infused covers that need to be replaced every three to six months.

Others like Malouf, UK-based Slumberdown and Silentnight offer similar products. Silentnight just partnered with the German supermarket chain Aldi to distribute its infused pillow. The average one contains about 150 milligrams of CBD.

“Studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep,” Harvard Medical School says, “in part by helping address chronic pain and anxiety.”
