Calibre Mining Corp (TSX: CXB) (OTCQX: CXBMF) is quite pleased to have had a clean slate on the safety front for the past three years at Nevada’s Pan gold mine.
Last month, the gold producer successfully completed three trips around the sun without any lost time incidents. Furthermore, Calibre’s employees and contractors have now worked over 500,000 hours at the site without any major injuries.
Calibre says this recent success results from a safety culture at Pan that prioritizes sound planning and careful decision making among workers.
“When they own their safety and know that they can slow down and ask the right questions, get the right equipment, or even stop work to ensure safety – people will do the right thing,” Pan Safety Manager Ed Spear described.
He says Calibre has an outstanding team that follows these principles every day.
“You need to have the whole team in that mindset, thinking about safety and environmental concerns,” VP of Environmental Affairs, Dan Ferriter, concurred.
Calibre hosts weekly safety meetings at the operation and more substantial “timeouts” every quarter to review the mine’s safety scheme. As conditions continually change the team’s action plan must be altered accordingly. Calibre was recently recognized for exemplary safety practices at Newfoundland’s Valentine gold project too.

Calibre prioritizes ‘industrial hygiene’
Spear says there is a big push for this in Nevada right now. Industrial hygiene monitoring involves assessing conditions in the workplace that have potential to cause employees illnesses or discomfort.
Testing the work area for factors that could lead to lead, mercury or silica exposure is an example. The United States is expected to publish new exposure limits for substances like these in the immediate future, Calibre says.
Going forward, the gold miner will enhance its focus on providing workers with training needed for performing tasks at heights, in confined spaces or other potentially dangerous scenarios.
“We all wish we had a crystal ball so we could see into the future,” Spear said. “But we don’t, so we have to live in a ‘what if’ world, constantly looking for things that could go wrong and being prepared.”
In addition to continually improving safety practices, Calibre has been consistently increasing its gold production yield every year.
A proven history of growth: since 2020, we have consistently exceeded our previous year’s consolidated annual gold production.
