Adobe unveils AI-powered sound effects generator ‘Project Super Sonic’

This program will examine a person’s attempt to create a sound with their voice and then generate more realistic noises

California’s tech giant Adobe Inc (NASDAQ: ADBE) demonstrated the capabilities of its sound effect-generating AI tool prototype this week in Miami.

The reveal was made at the company’s annual MAX conference. Adobe showcases its latest achievements at these events.

Attendees were quite impressed by “Project Super Sonic.” Applause filled the auditorium when Adobe’s Head of Sound Design AI Research, Justin Salamon, demonstrated the program’s ability to take mimicked noises recorded by users and convert them into realistic sound effects.

He imitated the roar of mythical monsters and inserted it where he wanted on the video timeline. Then, within 30 seconds or so, the AI tool was able to provide a high-grade growl that sounded like something you would hear in a fantasy realm. It is uncertain when Project Super Sonic will become publicly available.

“We wanted to go beyond the initial workflow of text to sound,” Salamon explained to TechCrunch, “and that’s why we worked on the vocal control that gives you that precise command over energy and timing, that really turns it into an expressive tool.”

Adobe unveils other video editing tools

The tech major also showcased its Project in Motion — another AI prototype tool that enables users to add video effects to their animations by just describing what they want in a text prompt. The audience in Florida was quite impressed with this reveal too.

Another, Project Scenic, enables video editors to generate and edit 3-dimensional scenes with text prompts as well. Once the 3D layout has been created, Adobe’s software can layer realistic looking graphics over top of it.

“Project Scenic empowers us to have much more control of the overall layout,” Adobe’s research scientist Yu Shen said.

In recent days, the company has shifted its focus to artificial intelligence as the technology rapidly develops. In addition to prototype demos, Adobe revealed dozens of new features for its Creative Cloud applications at this year’s MAX conference.

The event started on Monday and concluded on Wednesday.
