A luxury hotel in New York City is now offering a state-of-the art sleep enhancement technology experience for those with deep pockets.
Equinox Hotels formally launched its new Sleep Lab last week. Matthew Walker, Sleep expert and UC Berkeley professor, collaborated with Equinox to establish the fancy set of rooms it is comprised of. He currently serves as scientific advisor at Eight Sleep and ŌURA — a snooze tech company with one of the world’s most popular ring wearables.
Britain’s wellness innovation tech studio White Mirror also contributed to its establishment.
The Sleep Lab features adaptive temperature-adjusting mattress technology developed by Eight Sleep, guided breathwork sessions, rituals designed to promote healthy circadian rhythms and lighting tailored to promote melatonin production. The lab uses minimally disruptive red and orange warm spectrum lighting to optimize secretion of that rest hormone in the brain.
Eight Sleep mattresses also collect data from users throughout the night that can be informative for promoting better shut-eye.
The laboratory’s sleep features are complemented by cold plunges, a steam and ice shower, cryotherapy and wave tables sessions at a spa accessible in-house. Furthermore, users are given a magnesium sleep patch to wear during their visit.

Rich wellness enthusiasts rejoice
A two night package costs a minimum of US$3,400 and Equinox recommends that visitors with a thick enough wallet stay for five days.
“We have designed a first-of-its-kind experience that merges science and luxury, enabling our guests to achieve peak recovery and performance through optimized sleep,” Equinox Hotels CEO, Chris Horton, said in a press release on Jul. 8.
Equinox claims every aspect of the experience is backed by evidence-based neuroscience. Guests also have the option to use their stay to participate in a pair of sleep studies led by Walker.
“Your journey begins with personalized sleep + wake automation,” the luxury accommodation provider says, “temperature, lighting, sound, and ambiance intuitively tuned to your natural rhythm.”
Gary Brecka, wellness expert and host of the Ultimate Human Podcast, got a sneak peek in May before the formal launch.
